April Favorites

I think I say this every month but I can’t believe that a new month is already upon us. I missed doing a favorites post last month so this post is a combination of March and April Favorites. Let’s get to it.

1) Serial Podcast — This was one of my March favorites that I didn’t post about last month. To say that I was obsessed with this podcast is an understatement. I finished it in two days. I was late discovering this podcast as it was a sensation when it first began airing in October of 2014. It follows the case of a murdered high school student named Hae Min Lee. The murder occurred in Baltimore in 1999. Her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was arrested and convicted for Hae’s murder. However, there are a lot of questions about the evidence presented in the case and whether or not Adnan is truly guilty. Sarah Koenig begins investigating the case not from a legal standpoint but more from a journalistic standpoint to see if there is a possibility that Adnan was wrongly convicted. She interviews him over the phone throughout the series. Without giving too much away, the way the story is presented will take you on a roller coaster ride. One minute you’ll believe that Adnan is innocent and the next minute you’ll believe he’s guilty. The biggest question is “what’s the deal with Jay”? He’s the third main character in the story and very shady in my opinion. As this is a real life story I hate to use the words “I loved it” and “I was obsessed with it” because I don’t want to make light of the fact that a young girl died. I think what I loved the most about it was Sarah Koenig and her story telling capabilities. From the moment she spoke I couldn’t stop listening. She could have been talking about history and I think I would have been enthralled. If you haven’t listened to this podcast and you’re into who done it stories then listen to this one. See what you think. Is Adnan innocent or guilty?

2) Afterbuzz TV — After listening to Serial I became obsessed with podcasts. I’ve never really had an interest in them before but listening to Serial made my work day go by faster. I was on the hunt for other podcasts and couldn’t find any quite on the same level of Serial in terms of mystery but The Generation Why and True Murder podcasts cover some interesting cases. After listening to all these mysteries I needed something more lighthearted and my friend Kim told me about Afterbuzz TV. Afterbuzz has podcasts for over 300 television shows. From The Walking Dead to Scandal, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, Grey’s Anatomy, etc if you have a favorite show there is likely a podcast for it. They also have a YouTube channel if watching shows is more your thing than just listening. I’m one of those people who loves to discuss a show after it’s aired so it’s so awesome to listen to the podcasts because they are like round table discussions. I’ll admit there are some show hosts that are a bit annoying or too opinionated but overall I love Afterbuzz TV. Give it a try if you too love to discuss your favorite shows or hear discussions about them.

3) The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins — I don’t get to read books like I used to. Between working full-time, having a stencil business, trying to blog and all of life’s responsibilities I’m exhausted a lot. Grabbing a book and reading seems more like a chore than enjoyable. Last month I decided to try listening to an audible book. It’s not quite the same as actually reading a book for yourself but I really enjoyed it because I’m able to listen while at work or driving in my car. I can still “read” without actually having to read. It’s quite convenient. I chose The Girl on the Train because again I love a good mystery. It takes place in England so the women narrating all spoke with English accents. This made it fun to listen to. Rachel, the girl on the train, has gone through a divorce and is an alcoholic. She commutes to London everyday and on the way there and back she passes the home where she used to live with her ex-husband. Next to her old home lives a couple that she names Jess and Jason. She doesn’t know them. One day she sees Jess kissing another man and then the next day she goes missing. The book follows Rachel through her quest to find out what happened to Jess whose real name is Megan. It also tells Megan’s story from her perspective as well as Anna’s perspective who is Rachel’s ex-husband Tom’s new wife. Rachel was in the area the night of Megan’s disappearance but can’t remember because she blacked out from being drunk. She tries desperately to find out the truth about that night. It’s a great book that has just the right amount of mystery, suspicion and danger.

4) The Following — I guess April’s favorites is all about mysteries and murders. Oh dear. I’m not a crazy person I promise. I’m just a big fan of Kevin Bacon and love The Following. I’ll admit that sometimes the show scares the crap out of me. I’ve jumped while watching it or put the blanket over my eyes. It can be intense sometimes to say the least and there’s a lot of blood and creepy people. Some will give you nightmares but I keep watching because I’m invested in the main characters and have to find out each week what’s going to happen with them. This season has been intense. A new character named Theo has model looks and acts like he’s a dutiful and loving husband and father but he’s one of the most sinister killers that’s been on the show. He gives me the creeps. There’s only four episodes left this season and I can’t wait to see how it’s going to end.

5) Covergirl Full Lash Bloom — I have a new favorite mascara. My old favorite has been Covergirl’s Lash Blast Volume but now it’s Full Lash Bloom. I have really long eyelashes so I need drier formula mascaras because if a mascara is too wet it will cause my eyelashes to fall and not hold the curl. The Full Lash Bloom mascara has the same effect as the Lash Blast Volume but I like it’s brush better. It’s separates my lashes more and they stay curled all day. I’ve even fallen asleep with makeup on (gasp) and woke up with my lashes still looking good. If you love a drier formula mascara and haven’t tried this one yet give it a try. I think you’ll like it.

6) Living Proof Full Thickening Cream — My last favorite of the month is this thickening cream. I put it on the ends of my hair and I do feel like my hair feels thicker with it than when I don’t use it. It’s got a nice scent that’s not obnoxious and a little goes a long way. You only need about a pea size amount of it so that helps with the cost because it’s a bit pricey. I figure if this line is good enough for Jennifer Aniston it must be good. Lol! She probably doesn’t even use it and just gets paid to say she does.

I hope you enjoyed taking a look at my favorites. Let me know what some of your favorites are. I’m always interested in hearing what products, TV shows, books, food, etc you like.

I’m editing a video for a card I made and hope to get that post up by Friday.
