Sweet Talk: The Cookie Puzzle

Do you remember Coffee Talk from Saturday Night Live? Well it inspired the name of a new series I’m launching on the blog today called Sweet Talk. Well I’m hoping that it will become a series. I hope to interview not only cookie artists but cake artists and bakers as well. There are so many talented individuals out there that I’d like to get to know better.

Coffee Talk inspired the name but the real inspiration came from an interview I recently did for my friend Karin’s blog Lisbeth’s Cupcakes & Cookies. You can read the interview here. I had a lot of fun doing the interview and it really got me thinking about how fun it would be to do something similar.

It’s only fitting that I start off my first Sweet Talk with my best friend Kim of The Cookie Puzzle. She is my guinea pig for a lot of things and someone I turn to a lot to bounce ideas off of and for advice. She is a dear friend and I know you will love her as much as I do. Throughout the interview I will be showing you some of Kim’s work. She’s very talented. Take it away Kim.

First off, I would like to thank you for this wonderful opportunity. Never in a million years would I dream that one day I would be “interviewed” by such a talented decorator, let alone have the blessing of calling her a wonderful friend. So thank you Melissa. My life is much richer because of you. So…about me? Hmm…Well…my name is Kim and I am the founder/baker/decorator/CEO and President of The Cookie Puzzle. Sound pretty fancy doesn’t it? Honestly, I am nothing too special. I am just a mom who works a full-time job, who found cookies with my son and together we have created a fun and successful “hobby business”. I am married to a wonderful man. In December we celebrate our 19th anniversary which is scary to think I am old enough to be married that long. We have one son, Collin, who I talk about a lot on my Facebook page and my blog. He is 18 years old, getting ready to start his senior year in high school, the reason I started The Cookie Puzzle, the light of my life, my pride and joy, and he has Autism. We also share our house with two small dogs and an aquatic turtle. We lead a simple life in a simple, small town and are as happy as can be.

Tell me about your name. Why did you choose The Cookie Puzzle?
Well…the “Cookie” part is pretty self explanatory, but the “Puzzle” part comes from Collin.  He has Autism and the puzzle piece is the symbol of Autism, so I just put them together to make “The Cookie Puzzle”…pretty cool huh?

Where do you live?
I live in the tiny little town of New Franklin, Missouri, which is in the middle of the state, halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis. No there are no baking supply stores within 100 miles and yes I keep UPS and USPS in business.

How long have you been baking?
Hmmmm….tough question. My mom was a stay at home mom so I always remember her baking when I was growing up. I am sure that I was under foot all the time with her. I have pretty much been baking as long as I remember. Cupcakes and drop cookies used to be a staple in my house. I have made all of Collin’s birthday cupcakes.

Is baking a hobby or a business?
I work a full-time job outside of the home so cookies are a hobby business for me. I often tell people that I sell cookies to fund my cookie obsession.

When did you discover your love for decorated cookies?
I found cookie blogs on the internet and began reading them a lot. Then during a big snow storm I decided to give it a try. Collin then became obsessed with looking at cookies on the internet and asking me to make them. It sort of snowballed from there. That was several years ago and cookies turned into a passion that we both share. While Collin does very little decorating, he has become my master bagger and heat sealer. When we make cookies for Cookies for iPads bake sales, Collin will always do his own set to send. So in a way it has become a hobby for both of us.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Honestly, with a full-time job I don’t get to make a lot of “for fun” cookies. Most of the time the cookies I make are what the customer requests for their order. Once I know what they want, I do google image searches and find cookies that I like, then modify it to meet my cookie criteria, which is making it with glaze and making it simple.

What one item in your kitchen can you not live without and why?
My KitchenAid mixer of course. It is honestly the single best purchase I have ever made. Well my husband got it for me, but still, I would buy it again and again.  Before I became obsessed with cookies I used to can a lot of jellies, relish and apple butter. I have an attachment for the mixer that is a strainer, you can just roughly chop the apples, cook them until soft and put them through the strainer. It would make the apples into apple sauce, removing the core and skin…magic I tell you. I would also make lots of relish and use the grinder attachment to grind the vegetables….again..magic. 

What is on your baking bucket list? 
I would love to take on Macarons……they are so pretty and tasty…and so “in” right now…but they scare me. I would also like to learn to decorate cakes. Nothing fancy,  just simple. Collin is obsessed with cakes right now and is constantly asking me to do one. He thinks that you (Melissa) are magic because you have flowers on the side of the cake.  LOL!

What three words best describe your cookie style/philosophy?
Simple, clean and tasty.

Aside from cookies and baking what else do you like to do? Any hobbies?
If it is baseball season I am a total baseball nut…love me the Kansas City Royals. I also like to read. However, my new passion for cookies has cut down the amount of reading I have been able to do.
