Inspiration Challenge:February {Famous Couples}

I can’t believe another month has come & gone. It’s time for another inspiration challenge. Stephanie {Ellie’s Bites Decorated Cookies} and I are now nine months into our year long challenge. I’ve really had a lot of fun doing these. I would like to thank everyone that has participated in our challenges and linked up your creations. We love having you and hope that you will continue to participate as we approach the finish line. Let’s make these last few month’s great.

This month’s theme is “Famous Couples” in honor of Valentine’s Day. I really struggled with narrowing down my couple. I changed my mind several times but finally settled on Homer and Marge Simpson. I love them!

I haven’t been feeling too well these days so I’ve been slacking on making tutorials. I promise to come up with some tutorials soon. The weather has been wreaking havoc on my body this year.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before but I really despise making character cookies. I’m not very good with faces and the thought of them stresses me out. If you don’t get the face just right the character is not recognizable.

Of course, I had to utilize my Kopykake. I traced my image with a yellow edible marker and then went back and outlined with black royal icing. After I outlined the cookie I sat there and thought how can I simplify the process and avoid having to make more icing colors. A light bulb went off and I decided to just color them in with edible markers. I used a damp paintbrush to soften the lines and color a little. Overall I’m pleased with how it came out but I wish I had used my Wilton #1 tip instead of a PME #1 tip because PME tips are slightly bigger than Wilton ones. The outline is too thick but I’m trying not to be as critical of my work this year and find beauty in it. So I’d say it was a success.

Enough about my cookie. Head on over to Stephanie’s post and see what she came up with. I think there’s a rabbit and a girl named Jessica 馃槈

Be sure to link up your famous couple creations below. You have the whole month of February to do so. Then be sure to come back next month for our next challenge “Spring Is in the Air”. I love Spring so this ought to be fun.

  1. This is one amazing cookie, Melissa! I couldn’t even tell that you used edible markers – it looks like there is a layer of colored icing underneath! I’m TOTALLY doing this sometime. I hate mixing a ton of colors, but I love me some colorful cookies 馃檪

  2. Excellent cookie and I love your choice for a famous couple 馃檪

  3. These challenges have seriously been so much fun!! I can’t believe it has been 8 months. Thank you for pushing me outside of my comfort zone. Looking forward to next month.

  4. This is such a great cookie!! This doesn’t even look like a cookie!! They are an awesome couple! I finally decided to participate this month.

  5. Nice choice for your couple! Your cookie looks great!! I would have never known it was done with edible markers unless you mentioned it.

I totally feel ya about slacking on tutorials. Sometimes I get so into the process of decorating cookies that I forget to take pictures along the way. It’s just easier and quicker to just show the final product. I need to work on changing that.

    • Got that right Mike. It’s way easier to post a finished cookie. I’m trying to mix it up this year by doing tutorials, recipes, random posts not about cookies, link parties and cookie posts with no tutorials. With a full-time job I can’t always do cookies.

  6. I love these cookies and the faces are just right. Great job and great pick for a couple.

  7. You are SO right about character cookies! I agree that if they are not perfectly done, it spoils the whole cookie. For that reason, I agree to make very few. I struggle with a lot of piping, but you certainly nailed the Simpsons…they look great! I couldn’t even tell you used markers on these! Love that idea!!

  8. I love Homer and Marge! Sorry it took me so long…but I finally got my cookies linked!

  9. Hi

thanks for the challenge, I had lots of fun making mine! Yours are so cool, Homer & Marge are definitely my second favourite TV couple 馃檪 I wasn’t sure if there was a linky button, so I added your button with the bee to my blog, hope that’s ok

    thanks again

    Shel @ Sweet Petite
