Princess Baby Shower Cookies

I recently completed some princess baby shower cookies for a friend and wanted to share them with you.

When I’ve made cookies in the past I’ve always been concerned with being so innovative and creative with my designs that it’s held me back. I spent so much time contemplating how to make my cookies different from others that I stood in the way of my own creative process.

I’m trying to step away from that mentality and focus instead on simpler designs with a clean look to them. You can spend a few hours on cookies or a few gazillion hours and the end result is the same. They end up in someone’s stomach never to be seen again. Sure you have pictures to document that they existed and prove how great your skills are but at the end of the day does that really matter? The customer looks at a cookie and says that’s nice whether it’s a Picasso or not. The only people that truly critique cookies, I’ve found, are other decorators. We have those eyes that look for details and flaws that most people aren’t even aware of.

So what’s the moral to my story? Stop hindering yourself from creating by comparing yourself to others. Do what you can do and be happy with the process.

I’m coming out of the fog I was in from the loss of my dog and I want to get creating again. I don’t want to worry about measuring up.  I just want to decorate cookies again for the joy and love of decorating cookies. Also, I want to start making more videos again. I love the creative process of making videos. Am I going to show anything that’s not already out there? Probably not but that’s not why I’m making them. They are simply to have fun and explore my creative side.

So here’s a short video I did showing how I stenciled these cookies. It’s also a shameless plug for my stencil shop Simply Sweet Stencils. I just added several new designs this weekend. I have a ton more designs I want to add but working full time prevents me from listing as quickly as I’d like.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you’re having a great start to your week. Please let me know if there are any specific tutorials that you’d like to see.

  1. First of all…LOVE THE COOKIES! But more importantly, I love your new simpler take on cookies, not that I don’t love the amazing detailed and innovative cookies that I have seen you do, but I love that you are realizing that, at the end of the day, they are cookies. I am so happy to see you doing videos again, they always make me happy, and I learn so much from them, as I am a visual person. Great job Boo…Hugs!

  2. Melissa, I hear you about keeping it simple. These cookies are’ simply elegant’ and I love the color! I find myself more and more using stencils and airbrushing to save some time in the decorating process. The video was great and I always enjoy your tutorials. Take care, Joan

  3. Your princess baby shower cookies are beautiful! I love the loops on the crown between the dots. As a glaze gal, that just wouldn’t happen on my cookies as the icing would spread into the dots. I love the clean look. I also love the new attitude. If I compared my cookies to others, I’d never make another cookie! As long as we are enjoying what we’re doing, that’s all that matters. Thanks for sharing your cookies and your talent sweet friend! Cristin

  7. These are too cute! I am the WORST at making cut out cookies. I somehow manage to mess them up every single time. I wish I could make mine look like yours- mine look like the pinterest “nailed it” comparisons (and not in a good way!).

I stopped by from Showcase Your Talent Thursdays.
