Inspiration Challenge: Down the Rabbit Hole

This month’s challenge was a bit of a doozie for me. When I first heard the theme I had a total block. Then my mind starting thinking about Easter. I had plans to make a cake or cupcake that literally represented a rabbit going down a hole. As time was getting closer to have my post done (I procrastinated as usual) I decided the easiest thing to do was take an Alice in Wonderland approach and make these.

The inspiration for these cookies came from a hat that I saw at Hobby Lobby.

It instantly screamed Mad Hatter and the ears incorporated the rabbit element for the challenge.

I’m trying to focus on doing simpler cookie designs. A tutorial is probably not necessary but for those that are new to decorating I thought I’d share.

To make these mad hatter inspired cookies you’ll need:

  • light blue piping & flood icing
  • ivory icing in a very soft piping consistency
  • pink icing in a very soft piping consistency

Begin by outlining and flooding your cookies.

Once the cookies have dried add the ears with the ivory icing. When I say very soft piping consistency icing, the consistency is not as soft as flood where it flows but much thinner than piping. When you pick up the icing with a spatula it wants to fall off right away. This consistency allows you to still pipe and hold shape but is soft enough for you to fill in right away and smooth the icing with a needle tool or toothpick.

Allow the ears to dry for awhile and then add a bow with the pink soft consistency piping icing.

Let the bow set up for awhile and then add the center dot. Then finish up the cookie by adding flowers all over it with piping consistency icing. I piped them as small shells. Begin by piping a dot and then pull towards you as you release the pressure on your bag to make the shell shape. Finish with a dot in the center.

I absolutely love how they came out.

I’m not going to lie. I was dreading this challenge because the theme had me stumped but ultimately I found inspiration at my favorite store and made some of my most favorite cookies ever.

As with all of our challenges, there is a link-up below for you to share your projects that fit the theme. We can’t wait to see what you come up with.

I’m anxious to see what Stephanie came up with. Hop on over to Ellie’s Bites Decorated Cookies and check it out.

Inspiration Challenges are a collaboration between myself and Stephanie of Ellie’s Bite’s Decorated Cookies. There are twelve challenges in a year, each with a unique theme. We challenge not only ourselves but you to come up with decorated cookies, cakes, cupcakes, recipes and crafts for each theme. A link-up will be hosted on my site for the duration of the month for you to share what you’ve created for the challenge. We hope that you’ll join in on the fun and can’t wait to see what you’ve created. Let your imagination guide you and inspire you.
