Inspiration Challenge: The Sky {Paper Flowers}

I know what y’all are thinking. What on Earth is “The Sky” challenge? Believe me I had a hard time coming up with a plan for this one. The only thing that kept coming to mind is rainbows. Rainbows are in the sky and with St. Patrick’s Day approaching they would be perfect. So I was all set to make some cookies with rainbows on them but I just couldn’t get myself to make them. When we did our first yearly challenge they were strictly for cookies. This time around we can do anything. I wanted to truly challenge myself to come up with something other than cookies. Friday a package arrived at my house. It was the new Cricut Explore. I was one of the lucky ones to purchase it on the world launch, on HSN, and secure a spot in the first round of shipments. I opened it up and starting playing with it. I knew that I had to find a way to accomplish this challenge using it and I did.

I still kept my original concept of a rainbow but made it using a paper flower. I surrounded the rainbow with “clouds”. Do you see my vision? I hope you do. I know it’s way out there but I really wanted to open people’s minds up to not take these challenges literally. Find a way to take a different approach to them.

I made the flowers using the 3D rose from the giant flowers image set. I’m so new to this world of paper crafting. I’ve never owned an electronic cutting machine before and was hesitant to buy the Explore as I had no idea if I would know how to use it. I’m still learning but in just two days I’m in love and excited to try more things. Hopefully I can do a post soon to tell you more about my thoughts.

Anywho, I digress. Back to the challenge. Every month I try so hard to get my projects done ahead of time so I can breathe easy but being the procrastinator that I am I fail miserably at it. Needless to say I was up until after midnight Saturday working on this project. Yesterday I finished up the flowers by adding floral tape to the stems which you can’t even see in the pictures. Lol!

You don’t have to have the new Explore to make these flowers. If you have an older Cricut you just need the giant flowers cartridge. I used hot glue to glue the petals on and 11 3/4″ cookie pop sticks for the stems. I cut the sticks to fit my vase and then wrapped floral tape around them.

I found this video to be really helpful in figuring out how to make the flowers. View part two here.

Now please head on over to Ellie’s Bite’s Decorated Cookies to see what Stephanie made. With it being Dr. Suess’s birthday yesterday I’d expect nothing less from her than a Seussical version to her challenge and she delivered.

Don’t forget to come back and link up your projects all month long. I hope I’ve shown you that there are ways to think outside the box with these challenges. It’s all about your interpretation.

Speaking of thinking outside the box, next month’s challenge theme is “Down the Rabbit Hole”. Stephanie picked this theme and I’m assuming that she had a project in mind when she chose it. Here’s hoping I can accomplish this one on time since I’m going out of town April 1st and that’s not an April Fool’s joke.

Inspiration Challenges are a collaboration between myself and Stephanie of Ellie’s Bite’s Decorated Cookies. There are twelve challenges in a year, each with a unique theme. We challenge not only ourselves but you to come up with decorated cookies, cakes, cupcakes, recipes and crafts for each theme. A link-up will be hosted on my site for the duration of the month for you to share what you’ve created for the challenge. We hope that you’ll join in on the fun and can’t wait to see what you’ve created. Let your imagination guide you and inspire you.

  8. I love the rainbow rose that you made, would love to make some for upcoming wedding but I don’t have the cart do you know if it’s available in Cricut Design Space for just that Rose? I’ve been looking but there are so many images. Don’t thought I’d ask in case you were aware of that. I may have to break down and do the download purchase of the whole cart. Thanks for any info and thanks for the inspirational share.
