Fondant Accent Flowers {Simply Sweet Saturdays}

Do you ever feel like your feet are stuck in mud? Like the world is moving all around you but you are stuck. That's what I've been feeling like this week. It's like someone zapped all the energy out of me. I'll spare you all the boring details but I found out I was sick and with the help of antibiotics I'm on the mend.

I needed an idea for Simply Sweet Saturdays that I could put together quick. I'll be working on a project that uses fondant flowers as accents so I decided it would be a great post for today.
To make these fondant flowers you will need fondant, tylose powder, flower plunger cutters in your choice of size, fondant shaping foam, piping gel, a small paintbrush, a paint palette, a small fondant roller and a stocking with either corn starch or powdered sugar in it. Not pictured are sugar beads because they are optional as the flower centers.
Begin by kneading a small amount of tylose powder into your fondant. I don't really measure it but just so you know if you add 1-2 teaspoons of tylose to 1 lb of fondant you will make gumpaste. I just add a little sprinkle to my fondant and knead it in. This helps the fondant hold it's shape better and dry faster. If you happen to add too much tylose powder and your fondant is too dry then just knead a little shortening into it to soften it.

Once you have gotten the fondant to the consistency you like it's ready to be rolled out. I like to use a silicone mat to roll it out on. I take my stocking that is filled with either corn starch or powdered sugar and tap it on the silicone mat. Then I roll out my fondant and cut out my flowers.
If all goes well the flower will come up in the plunger as pictured. If this doesn't happen no worries you can just use a small spatula to lift it up.
Push the plunger into the foam and the flower will be left with an indention. If you had to transfer the flower to the foam without the plunger then simply push the plunger so you see the tip and use it to push down the flower's center. I like to put my flowers on an artist's palette by you can use an egg crate or anything with a curved shape.
The final step is to add piping gel to the center with a paintbrush and then add a sugar bead as the center. You don't have to put centers in. It's a matter of personal preference. For demonstration I did one flower but when I make these I cut out tons of flowers at once and then go back and add the bead centers later. Once you're done let the flowers dry out.

I find the plunger cutters do not give a sharp cut and sometimes my flowers will have jagged edges but this does not bother me. Since I want to get them done quickly I'm not concerned about perfection. These flowers are great to make ahead of time. Once they dry out you can store them in an airtight container. I don't recommend making tons of cookies with accents like these because they are time consuming to make. Instead you might want to make one centerpiece cookie with floral accents. If everything goes as planned you will see a project with these soon.

I love using these flowers on cakes. Here's an example.
Now it's your turn to share what you've been working on.

President's Day Collaborative Project

I'm so excited to share this amazing President's Day project with you. It was coordinated by the very talented Anne of Flour Box Bakery. Anne assigned each of the participants one of the forty four Presidents. A few of the participants made more than one. This is the largest project I've been a part of.

Since history was never my favorite subject in school I thought it would be neat to be a part of this and learn a little something in the process.

I was assigned Millard Fillmore. President Fillmore was the 13th President of the United States from July 9, 1850 - March 4, 1853. He was Zachary Taylor's Vice President and assumed the role of President after Taylor died. He was the last member of the Whig Party to hold the office of President. He was a controversial President because he had different views on slavery. He was a supporter of the Compromise of 1850. When he became President the entire cabinet office offered their resignations and he accepted them.

Now that you know a little bit about Fillmore let's take a look at the other forty three Presidents.

Mini Decorated Cookies {Simply Sweet Saturdays}

I don't know about you but I'm glad Valentine's Day is over. I'm ready for spring & Easter. I love the spring time. I love the weather and the fact that it doesn't get dark early. I also love the colors and flowers. It's just a beautiful time of year.

I had a pretty busy week and I'm looking forward to relaxing a little this weekend before I start working on spring cookies. Earlier this week we had a surprise baby shower at work and I made mini teddy bear cookies for it. I rarely decorate minis but when I do I like to use only one consistency of icing and keep the design real simple. It just makes my life easier when working in large quantities.
It's been awhile since I made my last video so I decided to film a very short video of the minis being decorated. I really enjoy making videos and look forward to making more.

Now it's your turn to share what you've been working on.

Talk Nerdy to Me Collaborative Project

I don't consider myself a nerd. However, if you ask the people that teased me in school and called me a nerd, four eyes and all other kinds of names they would say I am. I was a good student who got great grades. People always wanted me to help them with their homework or they wanted to copy my answers when taking tests. Does that make me a nerd? I don't think so.

When I was asked by my friend Lene of Not Your Everyday Cookie if I would like to be part of a nerdy Valentine's Day project I said yes, of course. I love participating in collaborative projects but I'll admit that I really struggled with this one. I Googled ideas and changed my mind about a hundred times. I kept thinking who do I consider a nerd? Only one person kept coming to mind. Milton from Office Space.
If you've never seen the movie then the cookie and the saying will probably make no sense to you. I put my edible markers to use again designing this cookie and you'll see them again soon. I was proud of myself for actually sketching Milton instead of using an image from the internet on the cookie. I'm horrible at sketching but I think I did alright.
Now take a look at all the other wonderful cookies in this project. Be sure to visit their sites and show them some love.

Valentine's Cookie Bouquets

I wanted to show you what I was working on this weekend. I made two Valentine's Day cookie bouquets for a co-worker. It's been quite some time since I last made a bouquet and I was a little rusty. In the past I used to bake the sticks in my cookies but this time around I wanted to try adding the stick to the outside of the bag like Karen from Karen's Cookies does. You can see her tutorial here.

Not too bad for being out of practice.

Hope you're having a great week!

Chocolate Dipped Pink Heart Cookies {Simply Sweet Saturdays}

It's time for another Simply Sweet Saturdays link party. This week I'm sharing a quick and easy idea for last minute Valentine's Day cookies.
These chocolate dipped pink hearts came about as a happy accident because my original plan was a fail. I was inspired by these cookies from Lizy B. I wanted to see if I could use an embossing folder like the one I used for my fondant heart cookies to emboss a design on some colored dough. Everything went well until I baked the cookies. The design pretty much totally baked out. I guess you need to press a design really deep into your dough for it to work.

I was left with colored heart cookies which would make great last minute cookies for Valentine's Day but I wanted to kick them up a notch. I texted my friend Stephanie to tell her about my fail and she said "why don't you sandwich buttercream between two cookies and put sprinkles all around the sides?". Great idea! I thought to myself  "I have some leftover buttercream in the freezer". Then a light bulb went off. Why don't I make things even simpler and just dip half the cookie in chocolate and put sprinkles on it? I absolutely love them! Thanks Stephanie for helping me get to my plan B.

Now it's your turn to show me what you've been working on.

Photography Tips {Coupler Rings & Scrapbook Paper}

I'm anxious to show you the cookies I've been working on recently but unfortunately I can't post them yet because they are for collaborative projects. So today I thought I'd share some photography tips with you. Specifically I'd like to talk about coupler rings & scrapbook paper.

I mentioned in this post about my photography set-up that I use coupler rings when I photograph cookies. I use them to prop my cookies up and give them a different angle than a cookie just lying flat. I believe it gives the cookies a little more interest.

Also in that post you will see that I used a wooden cutting board to photograph my cookies on. It's great to use because it's food safe and can be easily washed. I love the way my cookies look on it but I was growing tired of using the same background over and over in my pictures. I began stocking up on scrapbook papers when I learned that my friend Kim was using them in her photos and there are ones that look like wood. I love the look of wood in photos if you can't tell. The only thing that made me hesitant about using the scrapbook papers was that oils from the cookies could ruin the papers and also I didn't know how many people had touched the papers and well that's kind of gross.

The coupler rings are a great way to solve those issues by elevating the cookies off of the paper. Here you can see that the cookie is not laying on the paper. I simply balance the cookie on the ring.
Now if you're not too concerned about the cookie slightly touching the paper then another thing I like to do sometimes is place the ring under the top portion of the cookie only. This is how that looks.
It's a pretty similar look but a slightly different angle. It all comes down to personal preference. Sorry for the plain white cookies but it's all I had available for an example.

So next time you're photographing your cookies consider using coupler rings to prop up your cookies. You can even use them on a plate or platter too. Try mixing it up and prop up some cookies with them and leave some without.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you're having a great week. I'll be busy this weekend working on cookies for Valentine's Day and a surprise baby shower.

Lemon Pistachio Sandies {Simply Sweet Saturdays}

It's week three of Simply Sweet Saturdays link party. This week I'm sharing a recipe for Lemon Pistachio Sandies.

When I was researching what to make for today's post I came across a little yellow piece of paper with my mom's writing on it. It was her pecan sandies recipe. I immediately knew that this is what I wanted to make but put my own twist on them.

Growing up my mom used to always make sandies because they're my dad's favorite. I used to help her make them. We would shape them like crescent moons and my favorite part of helping was dipping them in the powdered sugar. Making these cookies brought back memories.

I took the cookies to work and got lots of compliments on them. The lemon flavor is delicate and goes well with the pistachios.
Lemon Pistachio Sandies
Print Recipe

1 cup salted butter* {softened}
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons water
2 teaspoons lemon extract {I used Lorann's lemon emulsion}
2 cups flour
1 cup chopped pistachios*

Cream butter and sugar. Add water and lemon extract. Mix well. Blend in flour and nuts. Shape dough into balls. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 15 minutes or until slightly golden brown. Let cookies cool completely and roll in powdered sugar.

Yield: 3 dozen cookies depending on size

* I always use salted butter in my baking and the pistachios I used were salted because that's all the grocery store had. If you have salt issues used unsalted butter.

Now it's your turn to link-up what you've been working on.

Inspiration Challenge:February {Famous Couples}

I can't believe another month has come & gone. It's time for another inspiration challenge. Stephanie {Ellie's Bites Decorated Cookies} and I are now nine months into our year long challenge. I've really had a lot of fun doing these. I would like to thank everyone that has participated in our challenges and linked up your creations. We love having you and hope that you will continue to participate as we approach the finish line. Let's make these last few month's great.

This month's theme is "Famous Couples" in honor of Valentine's Day. I really struggled with narrowing down my couple. I changed my mind several times but finally settled on Homer and Marge Simpson. I love them!

I haven't been feeling too well these days so I've been slacking on making tutorials. I promise to come up with some tutorials soon. The weather has been wreaking havoc on my body this year.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before but I really despise making character cookies. I'm not very good with faces and the thought of them stresses me out. If you don't get the face just right the character is not recognizable.

Of course, I had to utilize my Kopykake. I traced my image with a yellow edible marker and then went back and outlined with black royal icing. After I outlined the cookie I sat there and thought how can I simplify the process and avoid having to make more icing colors. A light bulb went off and I decided to just color them in with edible markers. I used a damp paintbrush to soften the lines and color a little. Overall I'm pleased with how it came out but I wish I had used my Wilton #1 tip instead of a PME #1 tip because PME tips are slightly bigger than Wilton ones. The outline is too thick but I'm trying not to be as critical of my work this year and find beauty in it. So I'd say it was a success.

Enough about my cookie. Head on over to Stephanie's post and see what she came up with. I think there's a rabbit and a girl named Jessica ;-)

Be sure to link up your famous couple creations below. You have the whole month of February to do so. Then be sure to come back next month for our next challenge "Spring Is in the Air". I love Spring so this ought to be fun.
