Sweet Talk: The Cookie Corner AZ

Today I’m chatting with Jackie of Cookie Corner AZ. I’ve been a fan of Jackie’s work for quite awhile. She makes beautiful cookies and packages them so nicely. I have packaging envy as that’s something I’m still trying to master. She also has a great eye for color as you’ll see in the samples of her work below. Let’s get to know Jackie better.

Hi I’m Jackie of Cookie Corner AZ. I’m a Christian, wife, mom of two girls, protector of one spoiled dog, and creative spirit. Many people ask the how and why I ended up being a “cookier”. I have a post on my blog about my story which you can read about here. It’s a story of how cookies have been a blessing in my life and allowed me to serve others.

Tell me about your name. Why did you choose The Cookie Corner AZ?

When I decided to make this a small business, I chose this name because in my mind, I could visualize my best friend and I sitting at a CORNER cafe munching on delicious cookies and drinking iced tea. The Cookie Corner came to mind and I added AZ.

Where do you live?

I live in Arizona.  The city I live in is about 15 minutes west of Phoenix.

How long have you been baking?

I started this journey in October 2010 and that is the first time I really “baked”.  Other than boxed cake mixes, I never tried my hand at baking because I was afraid.  At that time, we didn’t even own a mixer.

Is baking a hobby or a business?

It started as a hobby and turned into a small business.  I find that if I lose sight of the WHY behind this adventure, I don’t enjoy the “business” part of it and my creativity kind of dwindles.

When did you discover your love for decorated cookies?

My love for decorating cookies made an appearance rather quickly.  After a few tries of decorating, I was excited that I could transport the vision I had in my head on to an edible piece of art.  It was kind of an addiction—the more designs I tried, the more I wanted to try.  I haven’t looked back.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Most of my inspiration comes from fabric, scrapbook paper, packaging and other crafty items.  Sometimes I get stumped on color combinations so I ALWAYS look at fabric.  Since much of my packaging involves fabric, I usually pick the fabric first and the icing colors second.  The crazy thing is I can visualize the packaging and work backwards.  My favorite part of being a cookier is the packaging!

What one item in your kitchen can you not live without and why?

The absolute thing I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (aside from ‘Green Apple’ my Kitchen Aid) is rubber spatulas.  They are small and perfect for mixing colors and scraping the icing bowls.  I won’t even tell you the amount I have, but they really do come in handy!

What is on your baking bucket list?

I’d love for Oprah to try one of my cookies!  Or even her BFF Gayle King.

What three words best describe your cookie style/philosophy?

Simple, personal, heartfelt.

Aside from cookies and baking what else do you like to do? Hobbies?

I really enjoy hiking. I love to repurpose things.  I enjoy browsing at antique shops and finding unique “old stuff” to decorate my house.

Let’s have some fun now.

Royal or glaze?

Meringue powder buttercream—kinda! It’s a combo of several things so it really doesn’t fit one category!

Chill or no chill?

Sift or don’t sift?

NEVER sift!

Thick or thin?
