Slice of Life Sundays: 11-3-13

slice-of-life-sundays

Where do I begin? Last week I didn’t do a Slice of Life post because I was too mentally exhausted. Last Friday I found out that my dog Pepper is sick and the weekend became a blur after that. We have wellness plans for our dogs and part of that plan is a comprehensive exam every 6 months. Friday my husband took Pepper in for her comprehensive. They drew some blood, gave her some shots that were due and sent her on her way. My husband and I were enjoying dinner that night when my phone rang and it was the vet. I immediately got concerned. She told me that two levels were high. I don’t remember what they’re called but they’re indicators of kidney disease. She wanted me to bring her back in Saturday for further testing.

Saturday we took her in and that afternoon I got the call confirming that she did indeed have kidney disease. Her kidneys were still functioning but not at 100%. They started her on an IV and repeated it Sunday and Monday. Monday her levels were back to normal. We now have her on a prescription diet for kidney health and medication. She will have to eat this food and take this medication for the rest of her life. We will go back in two weeks for a follow-up test to see how she’s doing. I keep praying that this is all a mistake and they are wrong.

There is nothing they can do for kidney disease in dogs. With diet and medication the progression can be slowed but not stopped. The vet can’t give me a time frame of how long Pepper has but I’m praying that she will be with us for many more years. We just have to monitor her for signs of deterioration. This is such a tough thing for my husband and I to go through. We are both animal lovers and our dogs are our children. We haven’t been able to have children of our own yet so our dogs mean the world to us. We would do anything for them.

Needless to say my blog suffered a bit while my mind tried to wrap itself around everything going on. I’m ready to get back to some normalcy but I’m still struggling wrapping my mind around everything. I just want her to be okay.

Thanks for listening to my story. I hope you have a great week. Did you remember to change your clocks back? I love feeling like I got more sleep but hate how this time of year makes the work day seem soooo long.

  1. Sending you and Pepper all my love and prayers. So glad to here that she is doing better…you are great mommy, and those girls are so lucky to have you as parents. Hugs!

  2. God luck with Pepper!

  3. I missed all that was going on with Pepper, but I am so glad she is doing better. I know how important our animals are to our family. Just like kids, when they aren’t feeling well, you do anything you possibly can to make them better.

  4. Melissa,
My thoughts and prayers are with you, your husband and Pepper. I pray the new diet and medication will stop the progression of the kidney disease and give Pepper many more fun and happy years. Remember, keep positive thoughts and your chin up! xoxo

  5. I love to know other dog-lovers. We have two kids, and 4 weenie dogs, and I almost love my dogs as much as my kids……almost. Will pray for your Pepper, and that you have many more years together. Thank God for good veterinary care. We almost lost 3 of our four dogs a few years ago to Parvo. Devastating……and we spent almost our entire savings to save them. Worth it, but nice to not have it happen in the first place. Thankfully they all 3 survived! They are a blessing to our family (except when they are naughty and pee in the house!)
