Keeping Your Mixing Bowl Squeaky Clean

Have you ever heard that oil is the enemy of royal icing? I had never heard it until I got into decorating cookies. I’ve never experienced any problems from oil with my royal icing but after I heard about the potential for it to pose a problem I was always paranoid. In the last year I started cleaning my bowl with vinegar to keep it nice and clean. I needed piece of mind since I make buttercream a lot.

Then one day I discovered the blue stuff on Pinterest. You know the blue stuff right? Equal parts Dawn dish soap and vinegar. I first discovered this wonderful stuff here. I use it to clean my tub, shower and sinks. I love the stuff. It really cuts through grime and grease. Anywho, one day a light bulb went off and I said why don’t I spray a little of this in my mixing bowl instead of using vinegar alone and then having to wash with soap and water. This way my soap and vinegar are all in one. It worked awesome and I’ve been cleaning not only my mixing bowls but my beater blades with it too.

Like I said I never had a problem with oil affecting my royal so I can’t tell you what it does. All I know is that I don’t want to find out and I take precautions to make sure I avoid it happening. A little of this stuff goes a long way. Give it a try. If not for your mixing bowl then for your house cleaning. My husband hates the smell of vinegar and that is a downside to this stuff but I try to clean when he’s not home so he doesn’t have to smell it. I’m used to it so it doesn’t bother me.

Thanks for stopping by today for this quick tip post. Hope you’re having a great week. Check back Thursday for a really fun collaborative project.

  1. Awesome tip! I’ve never made any homemade cleaners before, so I’m new to the “blue stuff” :)

  2. OMG, I love the blue stuff and can’t imagine cleaning my home or my “cookie-ing” things without it. It is the greatest concoction ever!

  1. […] Royal Icing and oil don’t have a good track record together. Its recommended you use Oil free Flavorings ( I find these at my bakery stores or craft stores like Hobby Lobby/Michael’s) as well as making sure your utensils are Oil free as well. My friend Melissa from Simply Sweets by Honeybee has a post on how to clean your utensils HERE […]
