Royal Icing Pansies

Today I’d like to show you how I made the pansies for this cake I just completed. They are made from royal icing and attached to the cake with a little buttercream. I figured the easiest way to show you how I made them was to make a video.

Before I link the video I’m going to get serious for a bit. Aside from opening up about my health issues, I pretty much try to keep this blog light hearted and technical but today I decided to talk to you about my recent experience with my YouTube channel. I started getting comments that were what I considered to be rude and not constructive at all. They were PG so I just ignored them. However, over time I started getting more & more comments like this so I decided to moderate the comments. I would have to approve any comment before it got posted. Now I’m a fair person and if someone has constructive criticism I’m not going to delete their comment. I’ll post it. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I know that not everyone is going to love what I do. However, when I start getting comments calling me names, making fun of me and using foul language that is where I draw the line. The videos I have posted were created for my blog readers. I wanted a way to show my readers how I decorate some of my cookies, cakes and cupcakes. I’m not trying to be some big YouTube personality and gain all kinds of success. I simply wanted to film videos for my readers and YouTube is the most common place to host videos. I work full-time and come home a lot of days dog tired and sometimes in pain. I write this blog and make videos because I love doing what I do and I love sharing and teaching. It’s not my job. To come home after a long day of work and have to read hurtful comments was just getting to be too much for me so I decided to disable comments on my videos. I was brought up with the old saying “if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all”. I’m sorry that I had to disable comments but it is what is best for me and my sanity.

With that being said I made a video of how I made the pansies. I used Wilton’s instructions as a guide. Mine are not as perfect and I’m sure the angle of my tip is not correct but this is how I made them and it worked for me.

  1. What a gorgeous cake! So sorry to hear about your experience on YouTube. Thanks for making and sharing the video.

  2. I cannot imagine why anyone would leave a comment other than to say how lovely the things you make are, and how amazing you are at making them. The pansies are beautiful and the video is great as it explains clearly and easily exactly how to make these and is so much better than just written directions.

    Keep going!

  3. Melissa, please try not to take those comments personally. That’s just youtube. People must find it fun to leave nasty comments. It’s not about YOU. Really. They go around doing that on any video they see. They’re idiots.

Thank you for sharing with us!

You’re wonderful Melissa! How sad that there are people in this world that have nothing better to do then to leave rude, hurtful and just plain mean comments. Your blog and videos have been a blessing to so many and I for am one extremely grateful! Keep up your amazing and talented work, I’d be lost without you!

  5. Some people will go anywhere and say anything for an audience. I’m sorry they found your YouTube channel as a place to park their insecurities. Don’t let it get you down Melissa and don’t let they stop you from ever making and sharing your work. Your pansies are very pretty, as is your cake.

  6. The anonymity of the internet leads to such nasty behavior – I’m so sorry that you had to deal with that 馃檨 Please keep making videos – yours are awesome!

  7. It’s a shame that some people have nothing better to do with their time! I definitely would not take it personally (which I know can be hard at times)!

I love this video…your pansies come out perfectly, and it doesn’t look too difficult! Great job on both the pansies and the video!

I love getting your emails! You and many of the baking blogs I follow have inspired me to become better and better anf busier and busier with my little baking business! Thanks for always sharing! 馃檪 Barb

  9. People are just plain rude! They hide behind their keyboards and think they are allowed to say anything they want, and not be held accountable. Sad….just sad. If you would kindly give me names, I would be more the happy to go kick some booty!

Hold your head high….you are the kindest person I know, you inspire me each and every day, and knowing you has made my life complete!

Keep doing what you are doing…make videos….people like me need people like you, who are willing to share their talent, teach us, and inspire us!

    Hugs!

  10. RI flower transfers are my favorite and I really like these! Also, fantastic video! Thanks!!

  11. You make it look so effortless, I always struggle with the pansies. thanks for the video

  12. so sorry you had that awful experience with negative comments! You did the right thing disabling your comments (imo). Thank you for taking the time to share what you know and have learned from experience!!! I for one absolutely appreciate it!!! (and hope you make lots and lots more!)

  13. I’m so sorry as well. I appreciate your videos. They give me hope that at least I can make a pretty cupcake or cookie with your help. Keep on blogging

  14. Your pansies look alot easier to make than I remember the Wilton class taught. Thanks for sharing.

  15. I know what you mean about the comments from YouTube. I received a bad one to and thought how mean. I think some people are doing this on purpose.

  16. Your pansies are beautiful and I’m inspired to try my hand at making some. As for the YouTube incidents, apparently there is an epidemic of hatefulness going around. I have read of the same thing happening to other folks who blog and post videos. It’s a shame that a handful of monsters can disrupt the joy you get from sharing with us.

  17. We love your videos and things you make. You just do what you have to. People are mean and don’t have anything better to do but hurt people. I look at it this way. They are unhappy in their life so they gotta make someone else miiseriable or at least they try. That’s how they think they can get by in life. Which is sad!!

  18. What a beautiful cake!!!! Love it!

  19. hi melissa. thanks for sharing. they are lovely to look at especially when you decorated them to the cake.
keep it up and hope you continue sharing your talent to us.
looking forward for more techniques 馃檪
    God bless.
